2011 was the year I first did… several things!

I love thinking, each year, about what I did in the past year that I had never done before. And I’d love to hear from readers on this! What did you do this year? Wow us!

Here are some of mine (in a list that is, by virtue of the fact that it’s my list, ridiculously self-focused):

  • Became a grandmother
  • Started SPACIOUS
  • Wrote a book
  • Wrote two more drafts of the book
  • Developed a website
  • Met lots of you
  • Hosted multiple SPACIOUS events
  • Met lots of new people in general (including my granddaughter, my favorite “encounter” of the year)
  • Stayed calm while watching a five-year-old stand on a coiled snake (without her knowing it)
  • Had new writing published (some in new venues) — here’s one on My Peripatetic Posse, a tribute to my sixteen best friends from Davidson College days
  • Created and taught a Skillshare class
  • Spoke at a PechaKucha event (with Joey Katona) as part of DC Foto Week
  • Traveled to Barcelona and fell in love with the work of Antoni Gaudi
  • Attended a TEDx event
  • Made a friend through Twitter (in spite of really, truly not getting Twitter)
  • Stayed up much of a night looking at the Empire State Building and the lights of New York
  • Hosted grown-ups for a sleepover (somehow different than having house guests)
  • Attended a Rosh Hashanah service
  • Started “sleeping with somebody’s grandfather” (as my husband teases me, since we became grandparents)
  • Ate lunch during an earthquake (as opposed to evacuating the restaurant as many did)
  • Inched ever closer to menopause
  • Fixed a camera (that broke when dropped) by throwing it on the ground (though it only produces neon pink photos now)… don’t try this at home!
  • Chose to see a very difficult play, Ruined, twice
  • Started liking bourbon due to a drink called a Brick Wall
  • Went to a party at 5 a.m. in pajamas and tiara to watch the royal wedding
  • Discovered Friday Night Lights and Matisyahu (about 40 years after most people, admittedly)
  • Experienced never-to-be-repeated 2011 in all its beauty, pain, normalcy and spectacular moments

  1. Great list. Ruined was certainly difficult… but one of the most spectacular plays I’ve seen!

I’ll be starting my own list later this week. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Wasn’t Ruined incredible? Did you see it at Arena? I want to see your list! 🙂

  3. So glad you valued your 6 th and 8 th items enough to include me ….. Errrrrr ….. I mean them on your list!!! Happy new year. I will thinking my list soon too! Good idea!! Thanks!!

  4. Cary — Ruined was SO powerful. I don’t know if I could have seen it twice. But it did an amazing job of translating the awful experience of sexual violence in war to drama. — MG

    PS I love/d FNL too:)

  5. We should talk about that… so interesting! Sounds like we have a lot in common.
