Some days it’s hard to find anything for which I’m grateful. Maybe I got up on the proverbial wrong side of the bed. Maybe I’m just feeling anxious because dire weather is forecast (as has been the case this week for much of the East Coast of the United States). Really, anything could be wrong — or almost nothing at all.

And when I agreed with him, we were off and running in a conversation that has stayed with me. What had his life experience been that propelled him to say that line to me, a non sequitur for sure, when I simply sat down in a chair next to him?

I once read that singer Carly Simon took a polaroid photo every day and kept them in a special album. As I remember it, she did so to spur herself to record specific things for which she was grateful. I like the idea of doing something each day to jolt myself into more gratitude. I tried Carly’s gratitude photo idea one year and made it eleven days. I found that file recently and couldn’t remember exactly what about my vacuum cleaner made me so happy on one of the days,
